Implementation of a New Methodology of Emission Inspections in Motor Vehicles with an Advanced Emission System

Abstract: This paper focuses on the implementation of a new exhaust-emission measurement system of motor vehicles equipped with a petrol engine and an advanced emission system. Our study deals with new methods of emission inspections using on-board diagnostics in order to increase the efficiency of emission inspection itself. The aim of implementing the new method of emission measurement is to eliminate vehicles that contribute to air pollution with emissions, due to an insufficient technical condition of the petrol eng… Show more

“…Solid microparticles are getting into the atmosphere and create smog in city centres. A vehicle with removed diesel particulate filter is subsequently degraded to below the emission standard EURO 4 [5]. If the filter is removed from the exhaust pipe, it is necessary to carry out an intervention into engine management in order to stop the process of forced regeneration.…”

“…Corrected absorption coefficient is a value determined by the manufacturer and it is used for determining the maximum permissible value of smoke D MAX . The formula for calculating D MAX is the sum of corrected absorption coefficient and constant which is determined by guidance for the performance of emission control to the value of 0.5 m -1 [6,7].…”

“…The emissions inspection station is a workplace specializing on performing motor vehicle emissions inspections. According to the size of premises and category of vehicles, their emissions system and the type of fuel for engine drive, emissions inspection stations are divided into individual types of workplaces at which individual types of emissions inspections are performed (Lenďák, 2013).…”

“…According to the roadmap, the emissions should be cut to 40% below the 1990 levels by 2030 and to 80% below the 1990 levels by 2050. Globally, the road transport sector is one of the main sources of carbon dioxide emissions and pollution (Lenďák et al, 2013;Szabó et al, 2013); therefore, the reduction of emissions from this sector is one of the key objectives in order to meet the Kyoto Protocol and create a sustainable transport system (Fontaras and Samaras, 2007). In the European Commission's roadmap, the share of the transport sector is set to be reduced by 60% by 2050 from the 1990 levels.…”
