Implementation Of A Three Semester Concurrent Engineering Design Sequence For Lower Division Engineering Students

Abstract: Over the past decade the software products available for solid modeling, dynamic, stress, thermal, and flow analysis, and computer-aiding manufacturing (CAM) have become more powerful, affordable, and easier to use. At the same time it has become increasingly important for students to gain concurrent engineering design and systems integration experience. The purpose of this paper is to communicate the dramatic effect that the new software has had on the way that mechanical drawing and engineering design are ta… Show more

“…11 At Daniel Webster University, design is taught across a three course sequence with students learning the design process, computer aided design software, manufacturing skills, as well as applicable engineering science skills required to complete projects. 12 Louisiana Tech University, has similarly developed a three course sequence providing an immersive, laboratory-based experience; the third course in this sequence focuses on the engineering design process and follows the IDEO design process. 13 At Rowan University, an engineering clinic course sequence (which is comprised of one course per term for all four academic years) provides immersive laboratory based experiences for students across all engineering majors.…”

“…Advanced CAD or computer graphics courses may also cover the creation of more complex swept and blended surfaces or solids 13,14 ; others include CAD tutorials within design courses which focus on manufacturing and analysis 15,16 . Most of these courses appear to be primarily skill-based and focus on the use of the CAD tool in the context of design projects, with little concept or theory content.…”

“…The drafting machine has been replaced by a computer, and the pencil and paper have been replaced by 3-D modeling software. Faculty started transitioning to solid modeling as the core topic in the graphics curriculum in the late 1990's and beyond 2,3,4,5,6 . A logo shown in Figure 1 was developed in the early 1990's to express the author's ideas at that time, and over time has had an international influence 7 .…”
