Implementation of a Web‐Based Patient Simulation Program to Teach Dental Students in Oral Surgery

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate a web-based simulation of patients (Web-SP) program on learning skills in clinical reasoning and patient evaluation in the oral surgery education of third-year dental students. A secondary aim was to investigate the program's effect on students' learning, knowledge, and attitudes towards virtual patient simulations. Authentic virtual oral surgery patient cases were created at a dental school in Sweden using the Web-SP platform. The Web-SP program was introduced in a two-ho… Show more

In this regard, interaction with others and group discussions must be taken into account in the design of virtual patient courses, especially when the courses cover diagnosis and treatment 2,28,37 …”

“…Simulation exercises used in dental education vary in complexity and technological requirements and can include modalities such as representative models, 23 virtual patients, 16, 42 standardized patients, 17, 43 and manikins 21 . Consistently, in those studies, similar cohorts at the same dental school participating in simulations utilizing both standardized patients and high‐fidelity manikins reported similar rates of positivity towards the experience.…”
