Implementation of collaborative multidisciplinary design optimization for conceptual design of a complex engineering product

Abstract: This study investigates the performance of the collaborative multidisciplinary design optimization framework and how it facilitates the knowledge integration process. The framework is used to design and optimize an innovative concept of a tidal water power plant. The case study helps to highlight the challenges that may occur during implementation. The result is presented as a modified framework with less implementation difficulties. The improved framework shows significant reduction in design time and improve… Show more

“…The focus of the paper is on the student survey, where challenges and shortcomings in the method proposed by Safavi et al (2016) to students to facilitate the implementation of MDO within their projects are listed and will be addressed in the proposed guideline. This information is generated from a Masterlevel course at Linköping University.…”

“…The person responsible for each task should manage the team for the tasks to be performed effectively. Figure 2 shows the guideline presented by Safavi et al (2016), which was delivered to the team members during the course. The group should then follow the guideline to develop an MDO framework.…”

“…In addition, Fujita and Yoshida (2004) develop a product variety optimization model for module combination and module attributes of multiple products. In this context, multidisciplinary design optimization has been used especially for complex systems (Brevault et al, 2018;Safavi et al, 2016). The use of single-objective models in the literature can be classified into technical design optimization, generic design and sustainable design.…”

“…Concurrent engineering also made large impact in the automotive, electronics, and computer industry in particular by supporting integrated product development spanning over different disciplines and lifecycle phases (Prasad, 1995, 1996). By today, the methodology of concurrent engineering is applied to conceptual design also in various industries and gets combined with multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) (Reysset et al, 2015; Safavi et al, 2016).…”
