Implementation of new Healthy Conversation Skills to support lifestyle changes - what helps and what hinders? Experiences of Sure Start Children’s Centre staff

Abstract: Effective communication is necessary for good relationships between healthcare practitioners and clients. This study examined barriers and facilitators to implementing new communication skills. One hundred and ten Sure Start Children's Centre staff attended one of 13 follow-up workshops in Southampton, UK between May 2009 and February 2011 to reflect on the use of new skills following a training course in communication, reflection and problem-solving. Barriers and facilitators were assessed with an adapted Pro… Show more

“…The role of maternal behavior, the mother's ability to control her own destiny, and her perception of that ability, are increasingly recognized to be major determinants of the potential to make such changes . Evidence from a complex intervention study based in UK Sure Start centers (community hubs at which young women and families may access help and advice relating to pregnancy and childcare) suggests that a psychologically derived conversation‐based intervention may help to empower women to comply better with supplementation and current national guidance on diet and lifestyle in pregnancy . This intervention lends itself to a complex mixed‐methods intervention, incorporating elements of the traditional randomized controlled trial, overlaid with quantitative analysis and qualitative data from individual interviews, and will form the basis for the next phase of the UK MAVIDOS trial.…”

“…(86) Evidence from a complex intervention study based in UK Sure Start centers (community hubs at which young women and families may access help and advice relating to pregnancy and childcare) suggests that a psychologically derived conversation-based intervention may help to empower women to comply better with supplementation and current national guidance on diet and lifestyle in pregnancy. (86)(87)(88)(89)(90) This intervention lends itself to a complex mixed-methods intervention, incorporating elements of the traditional randomized controlled trial, overlaid with quantitative analysis and qualitative data from individual interviews, and will form the basis for the next phase of the UK MAVIDOS trial. Observational studies clearly present limitations in the ability to derive causal influences, and intervention studies such as MAVIDOS are essential to establish the correct approach to intervention in pregnancy.…”

“…A co-creation approach works to involve these publics right at the outset of the study and includes them in the design and implementation of the research. While co-creation approaches have been applied by a number of DOHaD studies already, 42,43 this perspective could be highly relevant for the field on a larger scale as it can assist in maintaining complexity and context-sensitivity with regard to study parameters and health messaging. Historically, involving affected communities has been shown to improve research protocols and clinical applications significantly.…”

“…This will increase the lay trainers confidence in their ability to perform their role. Lay trainers will then conduct pilot intervention sessions with volunteers from the target group 25 . These will be reviewed in a supportive manner by the Research Fellow to resolve difficulties encountered.…”
