Implementation of Oxy-Fuel Combustion (OFC) Technology in a Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) Engine Fueled with Gasoline–Ethanol Blends

Abstract: Nowadays, to mitigate the global warming problem, the requirement of carbon neutrality has become more urgent. Oxy-fuel combustion (OFC) has been proposed as a promising way of carbon capture and storage (CCS) to eliminate carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions. This article explores the implementation of OFC technology in a practical gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine fueled with gasoline−ethanol blends, including E0 (gasoline), E25 (25% ethanol, 75% is gasoline in mass fraction), and E50 (50% ethanol, 50% is g… Show more

“…Controlling the kinetics of carbon gasification with O 2 , CO 2 , and H 2 O oxidants is a key technical challenge in applications such as the oxyfuel combustion (OFC) system, 1,2 integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC), 3 underground coal gasification (UCG), 4,5 net-zero emissions steel production system, 6,7 etc. In the context of future low-carbon scenarios, these processes play a pivotal role in the transformation of coal utilization resources.…”

“…Regarding the powertrain system of ICE vehicles, owing to the benefits for engine thermal efficiency, Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine has been the most popular choice instead of Port Fuel Injection (PFI) over the last few decades [6][7][8][9][10][11]. However, compared to PFI engines, the relatively high PM emissions from GDI engines become worthy of more attention, particularly the Euro 6c standard released in 2017 further restricted the PM number of GDI-powered vehicles from 6×10 12 #/km to 6×10 11 #/km [12][13] [14].…”
