Implementation of Prognostic Cloud Ice Number Concentrations for the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Double‐Moment 6‐Class (WDM6) Microphysics Scheme

Abstract: Ice clouds play an important role in weather and climate systems by modulating radiative budget and precipitation processes. On average, 50% of global surface precipitation is related to ice clouds (Field & Heymsfield, 2015). Furthermore, the representation of ice microphysical processes influences the spatial and temporal distribution of surface precipitation and storm structures (Milbrandt & Yau, 2006). Some studies showed that ice cloud and radiation interaction is also important in reproducing precipitatio… Show more

“…where N x (D) (m −4 ) characterises the number concentration of the diameter (D) of particles of a given hydrometeor class (x) and diameter (D); N ox (m −4 ) is referred to as the intercept parameter; λ x is the shape parameter and µ x is the slope parameter that determines the degree of freedom of the particle size distribution curve, respectively [62], where x = c, r, s, g, i corresponds to five hydrometeor categories (cloud water, rain, snow, graupel, and cloud ice, respectively). These parameters are formulated as functions of the number concentration N x and mixing ratio q x .…”
