Implementation science issues in understanding, collecting, and using cost estimates: a multi-stakeholder perspective

Abstract: Understanding the resources needed to achieve desired implementation and effectiveness outcomes is essential to implementing and sustaining evidence-based practices (EBPs). Despite this frequent observation, cost and economic measurement and reporting are rare, but becoming more frequent in implementation science, and when present is seldom reported from the perspective of multiple stakeholders (e.g., the organization, supervisory team), including those who will ultimately implement and sustain EBPs.Incorporat… Show more

“…These perspectives and the specific outcomes, as well as specific cost measurements, need to be brought together for understanding, collecting, and using cost estimates in a DNT multi-stakeholder perspective. In particular, conflicts in prioritising specific groups and their benefits must be taken into account [ 51 ].…”

“…Time spent on coordinating with community participants outside of meetings should not be underestimated and can require substantial amount of staff time especially in the startup phase of the project. Finally, in line with the call from Eisman et al (9) to consider costs of implementation from multiple stakeholder perspectives, it can be beneficial to develop a pragmatic approach to documenting costs associated with engaging community partners developing and using a template (such as the one we provided in Supplementary Materials). Since key resource categories will vary across projects, templates should be adapted iteratively in collaboration with community partners.…”

“…This collaborative approach represents an essential element for improving mental health care worldwide and harnessing stigma attached to mental disorders, since many stereotypes and misconceptions on people with mental disorders are frequent in primary care settings (Evans‐Lacko et al, 2014; Thornicroft et al, 2019; Unützer et al, 2020). Another important element is the collaboration with all community stakeholders, which can foster the dissemination of correct information on mental health and mental disorders to the different target populations (Eisman et al, 2021; Fuss et al, 2019; McGorry & Nelson, 2019).…”
