Implementations of neutron/antineutron (𝒏/𝒏̅) guides in experiments searching for π‘›βˆ’π‘›Μ… oscillations

Abstract: An observation of neutron-antineutron oscillations (𝑛 βˆ’ 𝑛 Μ…), which violate both 𝐡 and 𝐡 βˆ’ 𝐿 conservation, would constitute a scientific discovery of fundamental importance to physics and cosmology. A stringent upper bound on its transition rate would make an important contribution to our understanding of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe by eliminating the post-sphaleron baryogenesis scenario in the light quark sector. We show that one can design an experiment using slow neutrons that in principle can… Show more

“…Roughly speaking, systematic and statistical uncertainties should be equal in a properly designed experiment. This argument, as well as the fact that the sensitivity to the nβˆ’n oscillation rate increases quadratically with increasing observation times, prompts a question [26]: is there any advantage of using slower neutrons for such an experiment? Let us assume for the sake of that the design of a n/n guide enables the transportation of most of the initially available n and n to the n annihilation detector.…”
