Implementing a combined Delphi and Focus Group qualitative methodology in Nexus research designs—The case of the WEFE Nexus in Apokoronas, Crete

Abstract: In recent years, researchers and policymakers have emphasised the importance of understanding the complex relationships between Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems (WEFE). The primary reason for capturing these complexities is to understand how decisions made in the water, food and energy sectors can affect one another. Crucially, biodiversity and ecosystem services (E) play a mediating role in these relationships by making material and non-material contributions to all other sectors (W, E, F). The Nexus approa… Show more

“…Delphi was utilized for data analysis. Delphi is a systematic approach to gathering opinions from a group of experts through a series of surveys, with a feedback mechanism through rounds or rounds of questions, while keeping the respondents' responses anonymous [32,33]. The perceptions of the parties related to the implementation plan will be refined with a G-O-L-A-R analysis which can help researchers with 5 (five) characteristics: 1) Genealogical; 2) Obligation; 3) Lesson Learned; 4) Acceptance; 5) Responsibilities (Table 1).…”

“…By promoting collaboration among diverse stakeholders, the WEF nexus encourages a collective comprehension of interdependencies (Mohtar and Daher, 2016;Hoolohan et al, 2018;Melloni et al, 2020). Canessa et al (2022) presented a methodological framework that seeks to integrate the perspectives of experts, practitioners and local stakeholders on the nexus through the combined application of the Delphi and Focus Group methods using the municipality of Apokoronas in Crete, Greece as case study.…”
