Implementing a Hand Gesture Recognition System Based on Range-Doppler Map

Abstract: There have been several studies of hand gesture recognition for human–machine interfaces. In the early work, most solutions were vision-based and usually had privacy problems that make them unusable in some scenarios. To address the privacy issues, more and more research on non-vision-based hand gesture recognition techniques has been proposed. This paper proposes a dynamic hand gesture system based on 60 GHz FMCW radar that can be used for contactless device control. In this paper, we receive the radar signal… Show more

“…There are several existing radar-based gesture recognition algorithms. They are based on different hardware architectures, including the continuous wave (CW) radar [10][11][12], the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar [7,8,[13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20], and the multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) radar [8,21,22]. The CW radar is simple to design and has excellent Doppler sensitivity, but it lacks the resolution of range.…”

“…Moreover, vision based devices are often sensitive to various environmental factors such as light intensity, weather, and temperature condition. However, non-vision based gesture recognition through ultrasound, IR, and radar sensor [5], [6] are less sensitive to privacy issues and ensure efficient power consumption. It is quite easier to process streaming data captured from sensors as compared to the image data though accuracy of gesture recognition is still a challenging task that needs to be optimized.…”
