Implementing an intelligent video monitoring system to detect falls of older adults at home: a multiple case study

Abstract: Purpose Older adults are at a high risk of falling. The consequences of falls are worse when the person is unable to get up afterward. Thus, an intelligent video monitoring system (IVS) was developed to detect falls and send alerts to a respondent. This study aims to explore the implementation of the IVS at home. Design/methodology/approach A multiple case study was conducted with four dyads: older adults and informal caregivers. The IVS was implemented for two months at home. Perceptions of the IVS and tech… Show more

“…In this sense, using camera technology in the AAL context is also an issue of face keeping [21,22], privacy protection [12] and protection motivation [31]. While, to our best knowledge, perceptions of nudity in the context of AAL have not yet been studied extensively, acceptance, privacy perceptions, and user preferences regarding camera-based AAL technologies have been studied widely in various ways (e.g., [11,23,36]). These works might give hints about what potential users of AAL may think about nudity within this context.…”

“…Mixed methods (qualitative interviews and quantitative questionnaires before the implementation, at the midpoint, and at the end); 4 older adults (aged≥65 years) and 4 informal caregivers Canada Lapierre et al [44] 96% of the participants were favorable or partially favorable to the IVS. About half (48%) said that they would use it.…”

“…The privacy-by-design paradigm in technology allows data protection through inherent technology design [56]. Six of the 22 selected studies used different kinds of privacy-by-design techniques for privacy preservation [34,35,37,[43][44][45]. These techniques allow automatic processing of images so that the obtained visual information is filtered to guarantee privacy, such as customized blurred or silhouette images.…”

“…It is important to emphasize here that the current work has a limited scope, as mentioned previously. A practical implementation of abnormal behavior detection systems also involves exploring many other aspects, including a consideration of the person-environment interaction, such as those reported in [4,23] for a fall detection system. Once implemented, such a system can take a video file or a webcam video stream as input, detect the abnormal behaviors as trained, and generate multiple types of alerts.…”
