Implementing lean six sigma and discrete-event simulation for tutoring operations in higher education institutions

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this study is to improve the utilization of walk-in tutors at the University of Dayton. Design/methodology/approach This paper discusses the application of mixed methods participatory action research with the use of the lean six sigma (LSS) define-measure-analyze-improve-control (DMAIC) methodology combined with discrete event simulation to improve the tutoring processes at the University of Dayton. Findings The impact of these improvements provided a great balance between tutor util… Show more

“…The simulation model allowed the researchers to study the effect of management commitment, workforce adherence, employee perception towards lean and training on the manufacturing process. In a different approach, Furterer et al (2019) used DES to test a LSS-based plan to enhance tutoring operations by increasing the number of courses delivered and improving tutors’ utilization rates. Similarly, Acosta-Vargas et al (2021) used the DMAIC method along with DES to improve the production of a furniture manufacturing factory.…”

“…Due to limitations attributed to the overload of tasks caused by the pandemic, a minimum number of courses were held. The digitalisation of the university was at the heart of their concerns, as well as the crisis generated and the lack of knowledge about the future [22,66,67,[76][77][78][79]. Intercultural universities have faced unique situations that have been responded to with a careful look at cultural and social diversity, respecting the idiosyncrasy of the other and the meaning of otherness [14,80].…”

“…Most of the literature focuses on hard skills development, while the teaching of soft receives less attention. This is a major shortcoming in lean knowledge management, given the practical importance of soft skills (Bortolotti et al , 2015; Gonzalez, 2017; Furterer et al , 2019).…”

“…Research on lean education and training has gained considerable attention Petrusch and Vaccaro, 2019;Furterer et al, 2019). Studies have focused on different teaching methods varying from in-class lectures and presentations (i.e.…”
