Implementing polyhydroxyalkanoates production to anaerobic digestion of organic fraction of municipal solid waste to diversify products and increase total energy recovery

Abstract: A simple biorefinery aimed at producing both biomethane (CH4) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), was proposed to valorize the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW). Anaerobic digestion (AD) was tested at different organic loading rates (OLR-I-II-III) (i.e. 3, 4 and 6 g L-1 d-1 , respectively), producing biomethane and volatile fatty acids (VFAs)-rich digestate, the VFAs were then used to produce PHAs. Specific biogas and CH4 production remained similar when adopting different OLRs (biogas of 522-600… Show more

“…PHAs biopolymers are obtained through microbial synthesis from carbohydrates and then they are accumulated in the cell (Ganesh Saratale et al, 2021). PHAs are biodegradable polyesters characterized by physico-chemical properties not far from those of petroleum-derived plastics (Papa et al, 2020), and their main applications are represented by packaging and agricultural/medical goods production. Although PHAs production is actually limited by the high costs of substrates and the use of pure microbial cultures, several studies are focusing on the use of mixed microbial cultures to reduce costs, which should permit enhanced PHAs usage (Villegas Calvo et al, 2018).…”

“…The bottles were stored at 20°C in dark conditions for up to 140 days. Basing on preliminary trials, SCG was not adapted to be stored alone since fast contamination by moulds occurred, therefore co-fermentation was attempted with GP, and the optimal proportion of 31. to the retention time of authentic standard curves using the Labsolution 5.90 software package (Shimadzu Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) integrating the area under each compound detection peak (Papa et al, 2020). The best AA for each biomass was applied as a screening criterion to select the best time for storage and then the extract was characterized for its APP profile and antiinflammatory property test.…”

“…The adoption of anaerobic membrane bioreactors for organic solid waste management is important for the recovery of energy and highquality treated water (Inaba et al, 2020). Anaerobic digestion can represent a simple biorefinery producing both energy and polyhydroxyalkanoates (Papa et al, 2020). Composting of organic waste helps to ensure environmental sustainability, reduce greenhouse effects by mitigating the production of gases like methane, reduce the volume of wastes drastically and recalcitrant substances (Ayilara et al, 2020).…”
