BackgroundIncreasingly, eHealth involves health data visualizations to enable users to better understand their health situation. Selecting efficient and ergonomic visualizations requires knowledge about the task that the user wants to carry out and the type of data to be displayed. Taxonomies of abstract tasks and data types bundle this knowledge in a general manner. Task-data taxonomies exist for visualization tasks and data. They also exist for eHealth tasks. However, there is currently no joint task taxonomy available for health data visualizations incorporating the perspective of the prospective users. One of the most prominent prospective user groups of eHealth are older adults, but their perspective is rarely considered when constructing tasks lists.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to construct a task-data taxonomy for health data visualizations based on the opinion of older adults as prospective users of eHealth systems. eHealth experts served as a control group against the bias of lacking background knowledge. The resulting taxonomy would then be used as an orientation in system requirement analysis and empirical evaluation and to facilitate a common understanding and language in eHealth data visualization.MethodsAnswers from 98 participants (51 older adults and 47 eHealth experts) given in an online survey were quantitatively analyzed, compared between groups, and synthesized into a task-data taxonomy for health data visualizations.ResultsConsultation, diagnosis, mentoring, and monitoring were confirmed as relevant abstract tasks in eHealth. Experts and older adults disagreed on the importance of mentoring (χ24=14.1, P=.002) and monitoring (χ24=22.1, P<.001). The answers to the open questions validated the findings from the closed questions and added therapy, communication, cooperation, and quality management to the aforementioned tasks. Here, group differences in normalized code counts were identified for “monitoring” between the expert group (mean 0.18, SD 0.23) and the group of older adults (mean 0.08, SD 0.15; t96=2431, P=.02). Time-dependent data was most relevant across all eHealth tasks. Finally, visualization tasks and data types were assigned to eHealth tasks by both experimental groups.ConclusionsWe empirically developed a task-data taxonomy for health data visualizations with prospective users. This provides a general framework for theoretical concession and for the prioritization of user-centered system design and evaluation. At the same time, the functionality dimension of the taxonomy for telemedicine—chosen as the basis for the construction of present taxonomy—was confirmed.

Mothers Intention to Use Mobile Phone Text Message Reminders for Routine Child Vaccination in Northwest, Ethiopia

Background: The immunization program in most developing countries including Ethiopia is challenged by lack of effective methods to track vaccination schedules. With the unprecedented penetration of mobile devices in developing world, mHealth applications are being leveraged for different disease domains. Among the different factors that affect the use of mHealth interventions is the intention of end users to use the system. In this research, we aimed to fill the evidence gap by investigating mother’s intention to use text-message reminders for vaccination in north-west, Ethiopia.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 460 mothers presenting with their infants for vaccination at a health facility from October 1 to 26, 2018. A systematic random sampling technique was applied to select study participants. Data were collected using validated instrument. Descriptive statistics were computed and binary logistic regression analyses was used to assess factors associated with the outcome variable. The regression results were reported as AORs with their 95% CIs. Results: Of 456 mothers included for analysis, 360 (78.9%) with 95% CI: (74.9% - 82.4%) of mothers have intention to use mobile phone text message reminders for vaccination. Of these, 270 (75%) also wanted to receive the reminders a day before the vaccination due date for the child. The preferred language for receiving reminders was Amharic language (58.1%). Mothers aged 35 years and above [AOR = 0.352; 95%CI: 0.149- 0.833], secondary education and above [AOR= 4.428; 95% CI: 2.046- 9.580], mobile phone use for more than two years [AOR= 3.627; 95%CI: 1.657-7.938], perceived usefulness [AOR: 6.372; 95%CI: 3.128-12.981] and perceived ease of use [AOR: 3.847; 95%CI: 2.061- 7.180] were predictors of intention to use mobile phone text message reminders for vaccination.Conclusion: Majority of mothers have intention to use mobile phone text message reminders for child vaccination. Mother’s age, education, duration of mobile phone use, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use were associated with intention of mothers to use mobile phone text message reminders for vaccination. Considering these predictors and user’s preference could inform the implementation strategy for use of the mHealth supported text messaging interventions in the resource limited setting of Ethiopia.

AbstrakMasa lansia merupakan suatu masa dimana kondisi fisik, kesehatan bahkan kognitif dari individu mulai mengalami penurunan. Dengan menurunnya kondisi kesehatan lansia, maka dibutuhkan perawatan kesehatan yang intensif dan cepat serta mudah untuk membantu lansia. Belakangan ini muncul banyak aplikasi kesehatan yang berfungsi sebagai pengingat maupun sebagai dokter online bagi lansia. Peranan ikon tentu sangat berpengaruh dalam pembuatan aplikasi kesehatan ini. Namun dalam penggunaannya, banyak ikon yang tidak efektif karena tidak dapat dimengerti maknanya secara cepat dan sukar untuk dikenali oleh penggunanya. Pengguna yang dalam hal ini adalah lansia terkadang mengalami kebingungan karena ikon tidak didesain secara baik sehingga menimbulkan kemiripan makna atau fungsinya. Berangkat dari permasalahan tersebut maka penelitian ini bertujuan untuk merancang ikon pada antarmuka aplikasi kesehatan untuk lansia. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah lansia yang berumur 60 tahun ke atas. Pembuatan ikon dilakukan dengan pendekatan metode User Centered Design dengan mewawancara responden untuk mendapatkan desain ikon yang paling nyaman digunakan. Selanjutnya dilakukan pengujian terhadap desain ikon yang dibuat dengan melakukan performance test menggunakan dua buah parameter (completion rate dan task time). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa responden lebih memahami dan cepat mengenali fungsi suatu ikon ketika ikon didesain dengan jenis exemplar ikon, dengan bentuk 3 dimensi dan berwujud konkret yang dibuat dalam ukuran xhdpi dengan tingkat keberhasilan di atas 70%. Therefore, elderly need help in maintaining their physical health. Technology development has made it possible and more affordable for many people to manage their health using their smartphones. Currently, there are many mobile applications that can be used to help users take care of their heath, such as healthy lifestyle, and online doctor. However, not many elderly take advantage of these applications. Some of them undergo technological leap, and lack confidence in their shavvines. Therefore, it is necessary to design an application that is easy to use and less intimidating to the elderly. One way to do this is by designing icons that are easily understood by the elderly. This research studied different design approaches that are suitable for the elderly, using a user centered design approach. The study found that respondents could better understand icons that were designed using the exemplar approach, represented in concrete and 3D form, and has xhdpi size with success rate above 70%.
