Implications of neuroarchitecture for the experience of the built environment: a scoping review

Abstract: PurposeNeuroarchitecture is a new interdisciplinary research field combining neuroscience and architecture that has developed and expanded since 2000. Neuroarchitecture originated from the divergence of previous multidisciplinary studies on the relationship between humans and the environment. However, scoping reviews of neuroarchitecture in relation to the experience of the built environment are lacking. Thus, this study aimed to provide the background and research trends of neuroarchitecture to contribute to … Show more

“…The importance of Lakoff and Johnson's achievement in embodiment has been demonstrated by their influence for nearly four decades. It has been researched in fields as diverse as linguistics (Lakoff and Johnson, 1999), mathematics (Lakoff and Núñez, 2000), literature (Turner and Lakoff, 1989), neuroscience (Gallese, 2005; Rizzolatti and Sinigaglia, 2008; Lakoff, 2008) and now architecture (Eberhard, 2009a, b; Mallgrave, 2013; Mallgrave, 2015a; Gallese and Gattara, 2015; Meyer, 2015; Robinson and Pallasmaa, 2015; da Piedade Ferreira, 2021; Lee et al. , 2022).…”

“…Meyer (2015) asserted that embodied experience provides a particular conceptual framework for experiential design practice with sustaining beauty. Since 2020, attempts have been made to introduce embodiment to architectural design teaching methodology (da Piedade Ferreira, 2021) and to architectural research concepts and methodologies (Lee et al. , 2022) (see Table 1).…”

“…The Sustainable Development Goals' (SDGs) most topics are related to the subjective human well-being (De Neve and Sachs, 2020). New fields have emerged such as neuroarchitecture by combining the architecture field with the neuroscience to understand the interaction between human and built environment by exploring the unconscious mind of people (Choo et al, 2017;Albdour et al, 2022;Lee et al, 2022). The development in bioinformatics, computer devices, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and other technologies has supported the development of research about this interaction (Karakas and Yildiz, 2020).…”
