Implicit prices of attributes of fine German Riesling: magnitude and heterogeneity

Abstract: PurposeThis study aims to analyse how wine attributes affect prices of fine German Riesling wines, provide estimates of the magnitude and heterogeneity of the attributes' implicit prices and draw conclusions on the pricing of fine wine and the research methodology.Design/methodology/approachImplicit prices of attributes of fine German Rieslings are estimated with fixed-effects regressions and their heterogeneity across quantiles of the conditional price distribution is tested with quantile-regression technique… Show more

“…From the managerial perspective, other studies delved into the impact of specific production conditions and winemaking techniques on wine quality [ 155 , 156 ]. As in the previous period, studies analysed the relationship between wine quality and price [ 157 , 158 ].…”

“…The selected quantiles reflect the price ranges considered for the linear regressions on ratings. As in the study by Fedoseev et al (2022), the DV was the logarithm of the price-per-bottle of each wine, and the same pool of regressors included in the rating regression models was used except for lognrat . …”

“…To tackle RQ2, following Caracciolo et al (2016) and Fedoseev et al (2022), we estimate a hedonic quantile model (HQM) through conditional quantile regression shown in equation ( 2), as implicit prices vary significantly over different market price percentiles. This technique is widely used for robust estimations.…”

“…Two additional recent papers also explore the role and value of the place of production and of the GI: Fedoseev et. al (2023) and Souz Gonzaga et al (2022) [35,36]. Information conveyed by GIs span from the place of production, the grapes used, the production method, the reputation associated to the GI name and established through times.…”

“…Moreover, the vintage is often included in hedonic price estimates [22,35]. Its influence on wine quality and prices is double; first, the vintage expresses climate variables, second, it brings quality transformation through ageing.…”
