Abstract: Summary. “…The surgical isolation of the vagal afferents at the level of the nodose ganglion as previously performed in cats (Mei & Dussardier, 1966) and in guinea-pig (Rech, 1966) is possible in sheep 5-6 months old, but division of both ganglia, leaving the bundles of motor fibres intact, led to acute oedema of lungs and immediate death of the sheep. Therefore, vagal deafferentation has been achieved by sectioning, mostly in the thorax, one vagus nerve together with sectioning the nodose ganglion on the other side Darcy et al 1979). The whole oesophagus was still innervated by efferents from one vagus nerve and either the whole thoracic oesophagus or its last 10-15 cm was presumed to be deafferented, according to the level of the vagotomy (cervical or thoracic).…”
