Importance of identification and typing of Brucellae from West African cattle: A review

Abstract: 23Bovine brucellosis is an endemic infectious disease which can impact cattle productivity 24 and welfare negatively, as well as human health. Sufficient knowledge on its 25 epidemiology, particularly on species and biotypes of Brucella at national and/or regional 26 scale are important to set up and implement efficient control measures against brucellosis 27 in a "One health" perspective.

“…In total, 58 isolates were classified as B. abortus biovar 1 (54 strains), biovar 2 (1 strain), biovar 3 (2 strains), and biovar 4 (1 strain) (see Table S9). However, re-examination of 20 of the biovar 1 isolates shows characteristics of biovar 3, the dominant biovar in countries proximal to Nigeria [34]. Moreover, VNTR genotyping [35] clusters these 20 strains with biovar 3a rather than 3b, the latter being typically reported in Europe (Ducrotoy, Bertu, Moriyón, and Ocholi, unpublished results).…”

“…However, contemporary assessments indicate a lower prevalence than that presented by Akakpo. Serological evidence of its existence has been demonstrated in many studies in sub-Saharan countries like Côte d'Ivoire (Sanogo et al 2013), Uganda (Kashiwazaki et al 2012), Ethiopia (Asmare et al 2013), and Togo (Dean et al 2013), and in particular some neighboring countries to Chad, notably from the southwest where the study area borders Nigeria (Alausa et al 1976, Bertu et al 2012, Mai et al 2012.…”

“…It is responsible for considerable economic losses through its negative impacts on livestock production, including late-term abortion, birth of weak calves, and infertility (Akakpo 1987, Corbel 1997, Bronsvoort et al 2009, Sanogo et al 2013). An epidemiological study of cattle, goats, sheep, camels, and zebu brucellosis was conducted in seven countries in tropical Africa from 1977 to 1983.…”

“…From a public health perspective, data on prevailing strains will be useful in the investigation of pyrexia of unknown origin studies in humans [38], disease outbreaks in domestic ruminants, and to appreciate the appropriateness of antigen/vaccination strains used in the region. This information is also useful to differentiate between naturally occurring outbreaks and bioterrorism.…”
