Importance of meniscal injury diagnosis and surgical management in dogs during reconstruction of cranial cruciate ligament rupture: A retrospective study

Abstract: Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the benefits of the clinical outcome of meniscal injury diagnosis and surgical management during the reconstruction of cranial cruciate ligament rupture (RCCL) in dogs. Materials and methods: For these purpose two groups with 2 different surgery regimens; group 1 (G1), RCCL was corrected with partial meniscectomy and tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA), and another one (group-2, G2) only with TTA. Long-term follow-up about postoperative complications and a… Show more

“…General anesthesia was administered via a slow intravenous injection of propofol 6–8 mg/kg, and sevoflurane (1%–5%) was used to maintain anesthesia [5]. Positive pressure was maintained by a ventilator, and ECG and end-tidal CO 2 were monitored automatically by an automated anesthetic machine (PAIEON, J & TEC, Goyang-Si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea) during surgery [1820]. In preparation for surgery, intravenous (IV) 0.9% normal saline, cephradine, tramadol, and steroid dexamethasone or methylprednisolone sodium succinate were administered as described previously [5].…”

“…Co., Ltd., Seoul, Republic of Korea) infusion and volatile anaesthetic sevoflurane inhalant (1-5%; Abbott Korea Ltd., Seoul, Republic of Korea). Inhaled oxygen and positive pressure were maintained, and an automated anaesthetic machine (PAIEON, J & TEC, Goyang-Si, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea) monitored ECG and CO 2 partial pressure during surgery, as described previously (Seo et al 2017;Choi et al 2018a;Choi et al 2018b). After shaving the entire back region, aseptic preparation, clipping, and draping were performed.…”

“…Some authors ( 31 34 , 36 38 , 41 57 ) only included dogs with unilateral CCL rupture, so the number of dogs and number of cases were the same. Study group sizes varied between five subjects per group ( 56 , 58 ) and 1,732 subjects per group. The highest total number of subjects in one study was 1,732 dogs with 1,768 surgeries ( 59 ).…”

“…Most studies (51.4 %) deliver an unclear risk of bias as they did not correctly report every detail concerning study design and outcome data. Unclear or high risk of bias was also seen in studies ( 54 , 56 , 60 64 , 68 , 70 77 ) that were (partly) based on results stated by the owners or referring vets ( Table 1 ). These might not have followed standard protocols, but be influenced by the owners' or referring vets' personal opinion and bias toward the treatment.…”
