Important Developments in Romanian Propolis Research

Abstract: The most important developments in propolis analysis and pharmacological properties are discussed. In order to help in the Romanian propolis standardization, different methodologies for chemical composition analysis (UV-VIS, HP-TLC, and HPLC-DAD) are reviewed using new approaches and software (fuzzy divisive hierarchical clustering approach and ChromQuest software) and compared with international studies made until now in propolis research. Practical applications of Romanian propolis in medicinal therapy and c… Show more

“…Los fenoles y flavonoides del propóleos son los mayores responsables de su actividad biológica (43) . Los resultados del contenido de fenoles y de flavonoides totales de EH-M1, EH-M2 y EH-M4 (Tabla 2b) fueron acordes con los reportados por otros autores (17)(44) (45) .…”

“…It seems that naturally bioactive compounds may have a cooperative action with different types of chemotherapeutics. Particularly, Romanian propolis possessed high amounts of biologically active compounds such as phenolic acids, flavonoids (flavonols, flavanones, flavanols), aminoacids and minerals [12,13]. So, the composition of propolis varies according to the species of bee, geographic origin, month of collection, as well as to the solvent used in extraction process -higher content of active substances was obtained when ethanol was used [14].…”

“…In general, it is thought that the appearance of the absorption band at 270-330 nm is attributable to flavonoids and phenols (Mărghitaş et al, 2013) while the absorption band at 230 nm is characteristic for flavone/flavonol by-products (Yang, t al., 2013). Also, it is reported that band with λ max 290 nm, is believed to arise from Hispertin (Makawi et al, 2009).…”

“…Also, it is reported that band with λ max 290 nm, is believed to arise from Hispertin (Makawi et al, 2009). Variation in intensity and shift in the absorption band might be attributed to the different antioxidant ratios in flavonoids and phenols (Mărghitaş et al, 2013). A high correlation was found between the UV-Vis spectra of samples and total phenolic compounds that were determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method (Hamieda et al, 2015).…”
