Impregnation of Chitosan onto Activated Carbon for Adsorption Selectivity Towards CO2: Biohydrogen Purification

Abstract: In this study, a novel bio-based adsorbent was developed for biohydrogen purification by an adsorption process. Palm shell activated carbons were immersed in the chitosan solutions at the concentrations between 0.1-2 g/L. The results showed that the impregnation of chitosan onto activated carbons at every concentration under the investigation changed the BET surface areas, pore size distribution, CO 2 adsorption capacity and the CO 2 /H 2 selectivity. The chitosan impregnated activated carbon that was the most… Show more

“…The BET results reveal that the surface area, pore volume, and pore size of pure silica are 123.85 m 2 g −1 , 28.46 cm 3 g −1 , and 13.97 nm, respectively, and those of the silica impregnated with CO are 5.09 m 2 g −1 , 1.17 cm 3 g −1 , and 11.9 nm, respectively. The lower values in the latter case imply that due to the impregnation of CO into the pores of silica, only a little amount of N 2 is adsorbed onto the pores of the SiCO during the BET test . The impregnation of CO in the pores of silica is clear from the EDX spectra shown in Figure (a–c).…”

“…The procedure was based on the method described in Pokhrel et al (2016) and Heidari et al (2016). The original PSAC was modified with the prepared chitosan following the procedures described in Foungchuen et al (2016). It was labeled as PSAC-Ch.…”

“…The membrane separation requires the minimal utility in operation and allows an in-situ and continuous flow of biohydrogen, but it gives a low product purity and recovery and also requires the pre-filter/coalescer and/or the gas compression system 3 , 9 . Another possible process might be the adsorption 14 16 , because of its high efficiency to produce high purity biohydrogen, environmentally friendly, ease of operation and control 3 , 17 19 .…”

“…The carbon nanoflake hybrid synthesized from the starch powder in the presence of metal oxide and amine exhibited the CO 2 adsorption capacity up to 6.77 mmol/g at 25 °C and 1 atm 25 , attributed to its high surface area and mesopore-micropore morphology. The 12 wt.% chitosan-impregnated palm shell-based activated carbon (CHI/AC) completely adsorbed CO 2 from a CO 2 /H 2 /N 2 mixture (50:30:20 by volume) up to at least 5 cycles under the adsorption pressure of 4 bar at 298 K 14 , due to the presence of appropriate nitrogen containing surface functional groups on the surface of AC. The impregnation of KOH, KI, CuSO 4 , Na 2 CO 3 , and ZnC 4 H 6 O 4 on the AC surface importantly improved the CO 2 adsorption capacity of AC 26 .…”
