Improve the Zy-3 Height Accuracy Using Icesat/Glas Laser Altimeter Data

Abstract: ZY-3 is the first civilian high resolution stereo mapping satellite, which has been launched on 9th, Jan, 2012. The aim of ZY-3 satellite is to obtain high resolution stereo images and support the 1:50000 scale national surveying and mapping. Although ZY-3 has very high accuracy for direct geo-locations without GCPs (Ground Control Points), use of some GCPs is still indispensible for high precise stereo mapping. The GLAS (Geo-science Laser Altimetry System) loaded on the ICESat (Ice Cloud and land Elevation Sa… Show more

“…Building on this heritage, the next generation of space-borne Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ICESat-2/ATLAS) is seeking to monitor a diverse range of geophysical phenomena at unprecedented levels of precision and accuracy by photon-counting technolgy [5] . Comparing with America, though China started later in this aspect, currently ZY3-02 as the first experimental altimeter acquired 44 tracks effective data, and the combined adjustment of its laser and image data can actually improve the accuracy of uncontrolled elevation [6]. .…”

“…It is the second Chinese stereo‐mapping satellite, following the launch of ZY3‐01 in 2012. ZY3‐02 is the first Chinese satellite equipped with a laser altimeter for earth observation (Li et al., a; Tang et al., ). (Li et al, , had to use GLAS laser altimeter measurements with ZY3‐01 data.)…”

“…A high-resolution remote sensing, surveying, and mapping satellite system can deliver high precise image products with precise auxiliary data, such as satellite attitude and orbit data. Surveying and mapping satellite always has a small base-to-height ratio less than 1, so elevation measuring accuracy will be a bottleneck in satellite photogrammetry [ 4 , 5 ]. In the past, we could apply ground control points (GCPs) or ground elevation control points to reduce elevation error of satellite image products when the covered area was small, but now we cannot apply this method to global surveying and mapping [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…However, there are still some improvements in ZY3-02 compared to ZY3-01: the resolution of the multi-spectral camera is better, and ZY3-02 has an extra small experimental laser altimeter. The small laser altimeter, carried by ZY3-02, is designed to conduct a ground verification experiment to determine whether the altimeter can improve the elevation accuracy of surveying and mapping satellite image products [ 4 ]. Similarly, we should carry out the on-orbit geometric calibration test as the first step.…”
