Improved accuracy of intraocular lens power calculation by preoperative management of dry eye disease

Abstract: Background To evaluate the effects of pretreatment for dry eye disease (DED) on the accuracy of intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation. Methods Patients who underwent uneventful cataract surgery were included in the study. IOL power was determined using the SRK/T and Barrett Universal II (Barrett) formulas. The patients were divided into non-pretreatment and pretreatment groups, and those in the pretreatment group were treated with topical 0.5% l… Show more

“…It is therefore mandatory to rule out any source of error in the preoperative setting to reduce the risk of postoperative refractive surprise. DED is a condition with high prevalence especially in the elderly population and has already been linked to impreciseness of preoperative biometry, particularly anterior keratometry, in previous clinical studies (Doğan et al, 2018; Epitropoulos et al, 2015; Kim et al, 2021). Within this study, we could not detect significant differences regarding the repeatability of EIOLP and other keratometry measures after VTPT therapy.…”

“…Additionally, anti-inflammatory monoclonal antibodies, such as infliximab, adalimumab, tocilizumab, and rituximab, afford limited application against OSDs and remain extremely expensive. We have previously demonstrated the clinical efficacy of corticosteroids in managing DED ( 24 , 25 ). Nonetheless, the long-term use of topical corticosteroids can induce potential risks such as secondary infection, elevated intraocular pressure, and cataract formation ( 26 ).…”

“…Beobachtungsstudien haben gezeigt, dass ein symptomatisches trockenes Auge nach einer Kataraktoperation bei Patienten auftreten kann, die präoperativ keine oder nur minimale Beschwerden aufwiesen 24 . Darüber hinaus konnte nachgewiesen werden, dass ein präoperativ bestehendes trockenes Auge zu Messfehlern bei der IOL-Berechnung führt 25 .…”
