Improved Agent-Oriented Middleware for Distributed Smart Cameras

Abstract: In the recent past, much effort has been put into the development of distributed vision systems with smart cameras as key components. Smart cameras combine video sensing, processing and communication within a single embedded device and provide sufficient on-board infrastructure to carry out high-level video analysis tasks. Networks of smart cameras help to overcome some hard problems inherent to singlecamera systems by providing multiple views of a scene. This paper reports on an improved, agent-oriented middle… Show more

“…SPI addresses the limitations of MPI for the domain parallelism of embedded software by integrating relevant properties of MPI and coarse-grain data-flow modeling. A lightweight agent-oriented middleware for distributed smart cameras has been introduced by Quaritsch in [22]. The middleware implements messaging functionalities for collaborative image processing.…”

“…Smart cameras are embedded systems for performing image analysis directly at the sensor, and thus delivering description of scene in an abstract manner [1]. Networks of multiple smart cameras can be used to efficiently implement features like detection accuracy, fault tolerance, and robustness that would not have been possible with a single camera in such applications like surveillance or smart environments.…”
