Improved dimensional stability of nano-SiO2/wax modified ACQ-treated southern pine

Abstract: Southern yellow pine (Pinus sp.) wood cubes were vacuum-pressure treated with nano-SiO2 solution and different concentrations of amine copper quaternary (ACQ)/wax (0.5%, 2.5%, and 5.0% wax)-modified solutions. The effects of wax concentration and nano-SiO2 addition on water absorption, air drying shrinkage, and moisture swelling stabilities were investigated. The results showed that during the whole process of water absorption and air drying shrinkage, better stability of nano-SiO2 modified ACQ-treated wood co… Show more

“…Because the nano-SiO2 particles were insoluble in the water, trisodium phosphate was used to aid dissolution in the water solution; analytically pure trisodium phosphate was purchased from Tianjin Kemi Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd (China). The ratio of nano-SiO2 to trisodium phosphate was set to 1:10 based on our previous work (Yu et al 2016(Yu et al , 2017; 0.6, 0.8, 1.3, and 1.9 g of different types of nano-SiO2 (BET of 60, 150, 200 and 380 m 2 /g) and corresponding mass of trisodium phosphate were added into 100 g deionized water, respectively. The solutions were stirred using a magnetic stirrer for 1 h and then subjected to ultrasonic processing at 40 °C for 30 min.…”

“…indicated that the combination of hydrophobic silica nanoparticles and adhesive could protect the surfaces building materials from external damage without inducing a significant decrease in superhydrophobicity. Our previous work (Yu et al 2017) reported increased dimensional stability when nano-SiO2 particles and wax were applied to ACQtreated wood.…”

“…Among the above-surface modification methods, the modification of wood surfaces with silica-titanium composite films can greatly improve the combustibility, thermal stability, dimensional stability, photocatalytic activity and hydrophobicity of wood surfaces, which is a more effective and environmentally friendly approach [14][15][16][17]. TiO 2 has excellent photocatalytic properties, but its catalytic capacity is limited when visible light is used as an energy input, and the catalytic effect of Bi 2 O 3 can increase the photocatalytic Coatings 2024, 14, 371 3 of 13 activity of TiO 2 [18,19].…”
