Improved Electrochemical Performance of Alkaline Batteries Using Quaternary Ammonia Polysulfone-Functionalized Separators

Abstract: Flow-permeable separators underwent surface modification, and their performances were evaluated to determine the impact of an ion-exchange coating on the electrochemical properties of sandwich diffusion batteries. A zinc–alkaline system was used to evaluate this performance at high discharge rates and diffusion overpotentials across the separator. An alkaline-resistant anion-exchange polyelectrolyte was synthesized based on a quaternary ammonia polysulfone system to utilize the coated separators for faster ion… Show more

“…Notable examples are alkaline zinc and zinc-air batteries and hydroxide-exchange membrane fuel cells (HEMFC). [58,59] When compared to CEMs, AEMs usually possess higher electrical resistance and a lower conductivity, due to the lower anion mobility. [60] Furthermore, CEMs are mostly commercially available and exhibit a high variability in structure and good chemical stabilities.…”

“…The use of nonwoven separators as functionalized substrates have also been employed by coating the nonwoven separators with ion-exchange polymers. 14 Recently, a novel polymer continuous fiber fabrication technique was developed by utilizing a coextrusion and multiplication technique. 15−21 Utilizing this method, PP/PA6 fibrous filters were produced with a thickness of 0.6 mm, a pore size of 12.5 to 128 μm, and a porosity of 92.1%.…”
