Improved Energy Absorption Characteristics Based on Elastic Polymer-Modified Porous Material for Multiple Extreme Mechanical Impacts

Abstract: Energy absorbing materials are crucial for the protection of electronic devices in various applications. In particular, the protection of materials from multiple extreme mechanical impacts imposes stringent requirements on the characteristics of energy absorption and recoverability. In this paper, a novel design of composite material, elastic polymer-modified porous carbon, is proposed to meet such urgent requirements. At the micro level, the polymer fibers form an elastic skeleton in which porous carbon parti… Show more

“…Due to their good elastic properties, elastic frameworks can achieve rapid rebound after compression, forming a stiff armor layer to retain the porous structures. [48][49][50] During the next mechanical impact, the compression deformation of the pores continues to achieve good energy absorption.…”

“…Moreover, the acceleration sensor is fixed to the shell to reduce the influence of vibration. The surplus space inside the measurement system is filled with epoxy resin [17], which reduces the impact of overload and electromagnetic interference as well as the damage to the internal electronic devices of the measurement system during recovery. In order to ensure the reliable recovery of electronic devices during the launching process, 1045 steel is used as the protection material of the whole testing system.…”

“…The attenuation coefficient and the phase velocity are important parameters which can be calculated to assess the composite material robustness [44][45][46]. Moreover, the magnetostractive pulse-echo technique can be effectively used for evaluating the attenuation coefficient (ζ) and the phase velocity (Cp) as discussed in [47,48].…”
