Improved modelling of the unsteady‐state behaviour of an immobilized‐cell, fluidized‐bed bioreactor for phenol biodegradation

Abstract: istorically, the focus in water pollution abatement has been on the removal of suspended solids, nutrients and biochemical H oxygen demand. However, there is increasing interest in studying the removal of toxic and persistent compounds. Despite the xenobiotic nature of these compounds, many are at least partially degradable by microorganisms, particularly if the microorganisms have been acclimated to a given wastewater. The most common biological wastewater treatment method is the activated sludge process, whic… Show more

“…A dynamic model was developed to simulate the response of the bulk substrate concentration, the suspended biomass concentration, the concentration profile of the substrate in the biofilm, and the biofilm thickness in a fluidized-bed reactor subjecting to step change in organic loading (Onysko et al, 2002). The model was tested using phenol as substrate in a fluidized-bed system immobilized with pure culture of Pseudomonas putida Q5.…”

“…Examples of bioreactors characterized by the presence of three phases are three-phase fluidizedbed bioreactors [15] and three-phase airlift bioreactors [16]. Over the years, intensive research has been conducted on the modeling and analysis of operating conditions of the abovementioned designs of bioreactors [17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25].…”
