Improved numerical efficiency in a frequency tracker

Abstract: In the course of applying the Kalman filter approach to estimating the frequency modulation of a single-frequency signal, a numerically efficient finite difference scheme was derived for implementing the filter. Digitized field data were processed faster than 300 times real time on an IBM 370. The numerical approach described here is generally applicable to frequency trackers utilizing Kalman filters.
