The diffusion cell was contained in a stainless steel thermostat of volume 35 dm3; water was used as a thermostat fluid. The thermostat was stirred vigorously and the bath maintained to k 2 mK by means of a thermistor bridge circuit containing an instrumental operational amplifier, type 725, adjusted for a gain of 3 x lo5. The thermostat temperature was measured to * 1 mK with a Leeds and Northrup platinum resistance thermometer and a Croydon precision resistance bridge.
