Improved Reservoir Permeability Models From Flow Units and Soft Computing Techniques: A Case Study, Suria and Reforma-Libertad Fields, Colombia

Abstract: This paper presents a methodology that looks to solve the inverse problem of predicting reservoir properties on uncored intervals/wells, using soft computing techniques (neural networks and fuzzy logic), multivariate statistical analysis and hydraulic flow unit concepts. Our methodology to improve the prediction of permeability in Suria and Reforma-Libertad fields in Colombia is the following:Data quality control. We apply multivariate statistical analysis for quality control of core and log … Show more

“…According to Tiab et al (1993), for a naturally fractured or vuggy reservoir system, permeability is given as a function of total porosity, specific surface area, and m as follows: Therefore, following the hydraulic flow units concept, Ohen et al (2001) And using the same concept of hydraulic units, HU, for a matrix pore system, a plot of FRQI versus φ z on a log-log scale will delineate the flow units (Soto B. et al 1993(Soto B. et al , 2001. …”

“…Arpat et al, 2001). Soto et al(2001) illustrates the application of such methods to the characterization of a field in Colombia, where porosity was a fundamental parameter for a successful field development. The laboratory results on cores were extrapolated to the wells and by doing this, it was possible to obtain continuous records of permeability and porosity for several places in a reservoir.…”

“…As defined (Porras and Campos 2001;Soto et al 2001;Perez et al 2005), a hydraulic flow unit is an interval with specified properties which has noticeable development in the reservoir. These units are controlled by both geological and petrophysical attributes which are able to predict reservoir characterization.…”
