Improvement in biomass characteristics and degradation efficiency in modified UASB reactor treating municipal sewage: a comparative study with UASB reactor

Abstract: Low strength wastewaters (LSWs) are difficult to degrade efficiently in the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. The possible reasons for poor treatment of LSWs in UASB are: (i) low mixing due to low biogas production (ii) frequent biomass washout at higher hydraulic loading rate due to low settleability of biomass. In the present study, lab scale UASB reactor and modified upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (MUASB) reactor were operated with municipal sewage containing chemical oxygen demand (COD) in r… Show more

“…Con el uso de estos reactores se han reportado eficiencias de remoción de demanda química de oxígeno (DQO) y de sólidos suspendidos totales (SST) superiores al 60 % y 50 %, respectivamente (Elmitwalli et al 2003, Halalsheh et al 2005, Das y Chaudhari 2009. Sin embargo, los efluentes suelen requerir postratamiento para mejorar su calidad, lo que puede ser visto como una desventaja del proceso de tratamiento anaerobio.…”

“…On the other hand, substrate transport limitation may occur in UASB and HUASB reactor due to low mixing during the treatment of LSW. Lower performance of UASB due to poor removal of suspended organic matter during the treatment of LSW has been observed by many researchers [29][30][31].…”

“…Mixing can facilitate the release of produced gas in bioreactor. Therefore, higher turbulence in MUASB may help gas bubble to release from granular surface [27].Researchers have reported lower efficiency of UASB reactor during the treatment of low strength complex wastewaters due to the lower removal of suspended organic matter [28][29][30][31].Therefore, the presence of TSS possibly reduces the efficiency of UASB reactor during the treatment of municipal sewage in this study. Low influent COD results in low gas production, thereby decreasing the collision opportunity of influent solids with sludge biomass.…”

“…This prevented the washout of biomass, paving the way for better substrate removal. Granule size of the MUASB (1.7 mm) was found to be less compared with the conventional UASB (2.8 mm) (Das & Chaudhari, 2009). But density of the MUASB granule was higher.…”
