Improvement in distance and near visual acuities using low vision devices in diabetic retinopathy

Abstract: Purpose:The aim of this study is to elucidate the causes and level of visual impairment (VI) in patients with different pathologies of diabetic retinopathy (DR) who presented to a low vision care (LVC) clinic, to analyze the type of distant and near devices prescribed to them and the visual benefits thereof. Methods:A retrospective chart review was done for 100 consecutive patients with DR who were referred to the LVC clinic from June 2015 to June 2016. The reason for referral was assessed from the electronic m… Show more

“…[ 22 ] Various studies have described that patients with low vision get benefited from a single or combination of low vision devices either for near or distance. [ 23 ] In this study, the AR device helps for improving the visual performance both for distance and near; this makes it more preferable when compared to other low vision devices. AR technology benefits the low vision patients who have unique functional needs that may not be adequately addressed by existing treatment options.…”

“…These are hands-free magnifiers which provide a greater field of view and make it more comfortable for the users to read and write. [ 9 ] Handheld magnifiers (Low Vision Resource Centre [LVRC]-Hong Kong Society for the Blind [HKSB]) are magnifiers that are more comfortable for spotting and give a better working distance and portability. Stand magnifiers (LVRC, HKSB) are magnifiers that give a comparatively wider range of magnification with a limited field of view.…”
