Improvement in skin wrinkles from the use of photostable retinyl retinoate: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Retinyl retinoate applied twice daily was significantly more effective than a placebo or retinol in treating periorbital wrinkles. Importantly, no severe side-effects were observed.

“…Moreover, the retinyl retinoate was found to be a safe cosmetic product that did not lead to allergic or irritant contact dermatitis. All these results combined with the stability of the retinyl retinoate indicated that retinyl retinoate, which was synthesized via a condensing reaction between retinol (hydroxyl end group) and retinoic acid (carboxyl end group), removed the disadvantage of retinol and retinoic acid for application in the cosmetics industry (16, 17). That is, the side effects of retinoic acid and the instability of retinol were overcome by condensing retinol and retinoic acid.…”

“…In summary, retinyl retinoate was found to be a new novel hybrid vitamin derivative – retinyl retinoate, which had a higher improvement of fine wrinkles, excellent stability, and fewer side effects compared with retinol, which is currently used in the cosmetics industry as an antiwrinkle agent (17). Thus, retinyl retinoate can be conveniently used as an additive for cosmetics in the prevention and improvement of skin aging and medicines for the treatment of skin problems.…”

“…Kim et al . conducted two randomized controlled trials evaluating 0.06% retinyl retinoate . The first trial ( n = 24) was a 12‐week split‐face, placebo‐controlled study, and the second ( n = 22) was an 8‐week split‐face, comparison study on 0.06% retinyl retinoate vs. 0.075% retinol .…”

“…Retinyl retinoate has emerged as a potentially effective retinyl ester in improving wrinkles and roughness, but more studies are needed to validate these results. Based on available evidence, a retinyl retinoate concentration of 0.06% is effective in reducing wrinkles and roughness …”

“…Several categories of solutions, based on the use of active ingredients, have been developed. Among them, retinoids, a family of compounds derived from vitamin A, or molecules which interact with retinoid receptors and produce similar biological effects, decrease the severity of skin aging [19][20][21][22]. Retinoids counteract some of the physiological causes leading to the appearance of skin aging signs.…”
