Improvement of AZ91 Alloy Corrosion Properties by Duplex NI-P Coating Deposition

Abstract: The corrosion behavior of duplex Ni-P coatings deposited on AZ91 magnesium alloy was studied. The electroless deposition process of duplex Ni-P coating consisted in the preparation of low-phosphorus Ni-P coating (5.7 wt.% of P), which served as a bond coating and high-phosphorus Ni-P coating (11.5 wt.% of P) deposited on it. The duplex Ni-P coatings with the thickness of 25, 50, 75 and 100 µm were deposited on AZ91 magnesium alloy. The electrochemical corrosion behavior of coated AZ91 magnesium alloy was inves… Show more

“…This coating being porous and not completely uniform cannot sufficiently protect the Mg alloy against corrosion. In addition, the presence of chloride ions in the electrolyte causes cracks in the hydroxide layer that was formed [ 53 ]. The diameter of both semicircles increased in the case of the polymer coated samples in the following order: Mg < Mg-PCL < Mg-PCL-CM < Mg-PCL-CM-ZnO < Mg-PCL-ZnO.…”

“…The advantageous properties could be attained only if the reinforcements are distributed homogeneously and not clustered in the matrix. According to the literature available [ 153 , 154 , 155 , 156 , 157 , 158 , 159 , 160 , 161 , 162 , 163 , 164 , 165 , 166 , 167 , 168 , 169 , 170 , 171 , 172 , 173 , 174 , 175 , 176 , 177 , 178 , 179 , 180 , 181 , 182 , 183 , 184 , 185 , 186 , 187 ], limited research has been performed on CNT-reinforced MMCs due to difficulties in fabricating and dispersion of CNTs in the matrix. Most studies investigated the fabrication methods such as the casting process and powder metallurgy for developing Mg-based alloy [ 188 , 189 , 190 , 191 , 192 , 193 , 194 , 195 , 196 , 197 , 198 , 199 , 200 , 201 ,…”

“…Many surface treatments and protective coatings have been studied, including fluoride conversion coatings, micro arc oxidation (MAO), electroless deposition of Ni-P coatings, physical/chemical vapour deposition etc. [5,6,7]. One promising approach to corrosion protection is the use of hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings [5].…”
