Improvement of Chromium(VI) Extraction from Acidic Solutions Using a Poly(vinyl chloride)-based Polymer Inclusion Membrane with Aliquat 336 as the Carrier

Abstract: An important reason for the inefficient extraction of Cr(VI) from its acidic solutions into polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs), consisting of poly(vinyl chloride) as the base-polymer and Aliquat 336 as the carrier, was found to be associated with the leaching of Aliquat 336 from the PIMs into the solutions, where it subsequently reduced the anionic Cr(VI) species to cationic Cr(III) species. The PIM extraction efficiency for Cr(VI) was significantly improved by the addition of NaNO3 to the solutions, which sup… Show more

“…The investigators found that PIMs could be easily coated onto various materials. The PIM coated on glass beads and packed into a glass tube was applicable to the online preconcentration of thiocyanate [38]. On the other hand, Semghouni et al designed multi-frame flat sheet membrane contactors (MF-FSMC) consisting of ten parallel frames alternating aqueous and organic phases to be used for chromium(VI) ion removal from aqueous solution.…”

“…1) are important extractants used for the recovery of acids 19,20 and for the removal of heavy metals. 21,22 The main advantages of long-chain organic extractants include high equilibrium constants, high efficiency, low treatment temperatures, and low energy usage. LLE of corn stover prehydrolysates using mixtures with Alamine was shown to remove major fractions of acetic acid and furan aldehydes and improve ethanol production using the yeast Pichia stipitis.…”

“…These membranes are composed of a polymeric matrix, which serves as support of an encapsulated extractant (carrier) that is responsible for binding with the target analyte at the source solution/membrane interface and transporting it across the membrane, which can contain a plasticizer to improve mobility. In the case of Cr(IV), Aliquat 336 (methyltrioctylammonium chloride) has proved to be an effective and selective extractant in solvent extraction (SX) [ 18 , 19 ], supported liquid membranes (SLMs) [ 20 ], solvent-impregnated resins (SIR) [ 21 , 22 ], and PIM [ 20 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ] systems.…”

“…Taking advantage of the high dielectric constant values observed in PIMs with Aliquat 336 plasticized with 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE) [ 34 ] and the excellent transport properties of Aliquat 336 for Cr(VI) in PIMs [ 20 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ], in this work, such membranes were employed for MID-FTIR-PLS analysis of Cr(VI) from aqueous media. Once the system had been characterized and optimized, the calibration performance and the figures of merit (FOM) of the method were determined to show the potentiality of the proposed methodology.…”
