Improvement of Cutaneous Wound Healing via Topical Application of Heat-Killed Lactococcus chungangensis CAU 1447 on Diabetic Mice

Abstract: Cutaneous wound healing comprises a complex systemic network. Probiotics, naturally extracted substances, medicine, and chemical compounds have been used for wound healing, but the application of postbiotics as therapeutic agents has yet to be explored. Our study shows potential beneficial effects of heat-killed Lactococcus chungangensis CAU 1447 on type 1 diabetic mice. The postbiotic strain significantly decreased the skin wound size. The activity of myeloperoxidase secreted from neutrophils also decreased. … Show more

“…Postbiotics are a novel clinical strategy to consider for the treatment of infections in absence of cells. For example, in diabetic foot ulcers, skin barrier is impaired and thus administration of live bacteria is not a safe approach ( Nam et al, 2021 ). Here is where probiotic-derived EV administration could fall into place and replace probiotic beneficial effects like pathogen inhibition and immunomodulation.…”

“…In a cerulein-induced AP mouse, oral administration of probiotic Lactobacillus brevis SBL88-derived polyphosphate for 24 days prior to induction of AP mitigated the severity of AP, which was not only associated with modulation of the intestinal microbiome but also enhancement of the gut barrier integrity ( 225 ). A postbiotic, heat-killed Lactococcus chungangensis CAU 1447, could facilitate wound healing in type I diabetic mice; however, the authors did not investigate its effect on T1DM ( 226 ). Ferrichrome, derived from Lactobacillus casei ATCC334, has been shown to inhibit the growth of pancreatic cancer cells ( 227 ).…”

“…Microbes on a healthy skin microbiome live in mutual symbiosis with the host which means that the interactions with the ecosystem are beneficial to both parties [38][39][40]. Although there have been many beneficial health outcomes associated with their use [41,42], we argue it could be a natural hypothesis to suggest that probiotic-derived substances may not have the long-lasting effects on the ecosystem that live ones would have if introduced correctly [1]. This would need to be investigated in more detail in future work.…”
