Improvement of Different Types of Environmental Regulations on Total Factor Productivity: A Threshold Effect Analysis

Abstract: Based on the distinction of different types of environmental regulations, this paper attempts to test the threshold effect of environmental regulation on the total factor productivity (TFP) by employing a panel threshold model and a province-level panel data set during 2006–2016. Research results show that the influence of command-and-control and market incentive environmental regulation on the total factor productivity has a single threshold conversion characteristic of foreign direct investment (FDI) and fin… Show more

“…Cai and Zhou [20] tested the direct and indirect effects of three kinds of environmental regulations on green TFP, meanwhile testing the "Porter hypothesis". According to the impact of different types of environmental regulations on the threshold value of total factor productivity, Lei and Wu [21] found that the effects of different kinds of environmental regulations on the behavior and degree near the threshold were inconsistent. The other is based on the perspective of environmental regulation strength.…”

“…Xie applies a panel threshold model to analyze the threshold effects of new energy consumption transformation on economic growth with three threshold variables [29]. Lei found that human capital's educational attainment can only positively affect the economy when the economy is developed to a certain level [30]. Cepni O finds that inequality can only change positively for economic growth with the level of economic development when the ratio of human capital to physical capital reaches a certain level [31].…”

“…Additionally, the direct effect of AI is not significant, because AI in China is still in its infancy. Additionally, the current total factor productivity (TFP) base is large [45][46][47]. For the central and western areas, with the development of AI, the level of industrial structure rationalization also decreases and the regional economy grows, which may be caused by the reallocation of resources.…”
