Improvement of dynamic notch toughness for the Zr 56 Co 28 Al 16 bulk metallic glass by local pre-deformation

Abstract: A B S T R A C TMode I dynamic three-point bending fracture tests are conducted on both as-cast and local pre-deformed Zr 56 Co 28 Al 16 bulk metallic glass specimens. Similar to quasi-static cases, the notch toughness of the pre-compressed specimens is improved compared with that of as-cast ones upon dynamic loadings, which is mainly attributed to the fact that the pre-compression can produce numerous shear bands, especially for main shear band, guiding and deflecting the cracks. In addition, the crack pattern… Show more

“…8a). As has been observed in other studies for quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions [29,30], shear bands guided the fatigue precrack advance off the mode I plane. Though the secondary shear bands were not obvious from the hardness maps, they could be seen from the etched samples and were oriented approximately perpendicular to the primary shear bands (Fig.…”

“…This resulted in rejuvenation of the glassy structure, as measured by relaxation enthalpy [28], along with higher toughness and a tortuous crack path [27]. Similarly, studies have used a pre-compression approach to demonstrate how oriented shear bands can guide cracks off the mode I fracture plane to improve notch toughness under both quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions [29,30]. However, the current understanding of how highly oriented preintroduced shear bands interact with cracks to affect the crack propagation behavior and fracture toughness of BMGs is highly limited.…”

“…The starting point of crack corresponds to the time when the strain sudden decrease. The initiation time of crack was determined according to the following formula 37 : tsgoodbreak=trgoodbreak−tugoodbreak−italicΔt, where tr is the starting rise time of the voltage signal of SG4, tr=t1+t22, t1 and t2 are the moments when SG3 and SG4 receive stress waves, tu is the time when the SG3 voltage signal begins to rise, and italicΔt is the time span required for the unloading wave to propagate from the center of the pattern notch to SG4, determined by the following formula: italicΔtgoodbreak=lC0goodbreak+r2+()W/22C1, where l is the length of the incident rod, r is the distance from the strain gauge to the notch, and C1 is the propagation speed of stress waves in the pattern.…”

“…Notched metallic glass have abstracted many interest because the global plasticity of metallic glass specimens could definitely improve, including normal and nano scale sample (Sha et al 2015, Yang et al 2017, Dutta et al 2018, and several methods, such as slipline field theory, finite element analysis (FE) and Neuber's stress analysis, etc, have also been applied to reveal the effects of notch (Qu et al 2014). However there are more attention paid on the effects of notches shape and sharpness, little care on the slope of the notch (Henann and Anand 2009, Sha et al 2015, Chen et al 2016, Gu et al 2017, but with different slope, there may exhibit different deformation and stress-strain state. And also when we want to check different yield criterion, such as Mises and Mohr-Coulomb criterion, the notch without slope may restrict the progress of shear bands, and the model may look like to afford Mises Criterion.…”
