Improvement of energy efficiency and quality of street lighting in South Italy as an action of Sustainable Energy Action Plans. The case study of Comiso (RG)

Abstract: Existing street lighting systems in most of Sicilian cities are often inappropriate due to the obsolescence of light sources and luminaires and of unsuitable light control systems unable to provide efficient on-off and dimming strategies. Improvement of energy efficiency in street lighting systems can be one of the key actions adopted by Public Administration in developing Sustainable Energy Action Plan in the framework of the "Covenant of Majors" activities. As a task of FACTOR 20 project a set of planning op… Show more

“…Penetration of more renewables could be increased with the implementation of smart grid technology similar to one described in [26]. One of the key measures that are implemented in all municipalities is the replacement of public lightning and it is recommended to follow the methodology developed in [27] when dealing with this measure. The selection of most cost effective measures and ones that should be implemented later is given in [28].…”

“…In that sense, case studies referring to specific measures may be adequate to evaluate their effect. Along this line, Beccali et al (2015) recently analyzed the adoption of LEDs to achieve the urban lighting energy saving proposed in Southern Italian municipalities' SEAPs, considering that the substitution of light sources alone was insufficient to achieve real economic benefits. (Kästel and Gilroy-Scott, 2015;Pillai et al, 2014;Schleicher-Tappeser, 2012).…”
