Improvement of Interoceptive Processes after an 8-Week Body Scan Intervention

Abstract: Objective: Interoceptive processes are defined as ability to detect sensations arising within the body. There is a growing body of research investigating ways of improving interoceptive processes. One promising approach increasing the attention to bodily sensations is the body scan (BS), a method stemming from mindfulness-based stress reduction. Research so far revealed only heterogenous findings of meditational practice and mindfulness-based stress reduction on interoceptive processes. Even more importantly, … Show more

“…Parental interoceptive knowledge could similarly help support children who are suffering from pain and acute or chronic illnesses. Other work shows that mindfulness interventions can improve different facets of interoception (Fischer, Messner, & Pollatos, ); future studies could examine whether mindfulness interventions boost parent/child interoceptive knowledge and downstream health and wellbeing. Programs that focus on developing emotional competence, such as the RULER program (Nathanson, Rivers, Flynn, & Brackett, ), could also test how teaching the interoceptive features of emotion experience and regulation supports children's growing emotional expertise.…”

“…For future research, it could also be interesting to investigate how different manipulation procedures or interventions influence the observed relationship. Several empirical studies emphasize that IAcc can be trained, for instance, through procedures such as food deprivation, physical effort, and self‐focus exercises (Ainley, Tajadura‐Jiménez, Fotopoulou, & Tsakiris, ; Herbert et al, , ) or mindfulness/biofeedback interventions, as well as the practice of power posing (Bornemann & Singer, ; Fischer, Messner, & Pollatos, ; Fissler et al, ; Meyerholz, Irzinger, Witthöft, Gerlach, & Pohl, ; Weineck, Messner, Hauke, & Pollatos, ).…”

“…The body scan, a method derived from mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques was shown to improve interoception (103) and could have potential for use among obese subjects who eat to control boredom or anxiety. Mindfulness contributes to improving emotion regulation by increasing interoceptive awareness (104) , thereby enabling improved integration of psychological distress, limiting the propensity to eat in this context, even reducing binge eating (105) .…”
