Improvement of Oxidation Resistance of Mild Steel by SiO2-Al2O3Sol Gel Coating

Abstract: SiO2-Al2O3 sol gel coating solution was used for coating of mild steel substrate by dip coating technique with withdrawing speeds of 250, 500, 750 and 1000 mm/min. The coatings were subsequently heat treated at 200• C for 1 hour in order to improve their corrosion resistance properties. The coating sol was synthesised using Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (C9H20O5Si) and Aluminium triisopropylate (C9H21O3Al). The corrosion resistance of the both coated and uncoated samples was evaluated by the Tafel polarizati… Show more

“…Various methods can be used for the deposition of coatings, such as sputtering [8], vapor deposition [9], spin coating and electrodeposition [10][11][12]. Nonetheless, with the exception of electrodeposition, these methods are not effective for creation of coatings of high quality and well controlled magnetic layers [13].…”

“…The use of electroplating to produce these kinds of alloys is attractive * e-mail: rsmozdemir@gmail.com because it is rapid, inexpensive, flexible, efficient and is easily extendable to high volumes of production in contrast with other methods, such as chemical vapor deposition and sputtering [10][11][12]. Use of electrochemical methods in deposition of metallic coatings is attractive due to a high degree of control, which can be performed by changing the experimental conditions [1].…”

“…There are many thin and thick film production techniques, each with its own advantages and drawbacks [16][17][18][19][20]. Among these techniques, electrodeposition has advantages of non-vacuum fabrication, ability of production at room temperature, aqueous deposition, low cost, versatility etc.…”
