Improvement of pseudo-3D pit displacement mapping technique through geodetic prism data integration

Abstract: In recent years, an innovative approach has been proposed in using two ground-based synthetic aperture radars to simultaneously monitor slope stability (Severin et al. 2011; 2014). The technique allows to obtain a detailed pseudo 3D displacements map covering large pit slopes. In October 2014, a similar experiment was conducted at MMG Limited's Century Mine (Queensland), using two real aperture radars. The outcomes of the test have shown that even if reasonable results can be achieved, more precise information… Show more

“…To provide additional redundancy self-checking, a natural extension to near real acquisition and viewing of the radar displacement vector data is to also integrate, cross reference and analyse movement differences in near real-time with other sources of vector displacement data such as automated prism monitoring data (Salvoni et al 2015). Depending on the number of radar systems used to obtain radar vector data, this approach would need to make allowances for LOS adjustments between relative radar displacement vector data and prism data.…”

“…With this approach, for spaceborne radar systems, it was possible to reconstruct the 3D displacement field from glaciers working on the ascending and descending passes of satellites (Mohr et al 1998). A similar concept can be applied to GBInRad, where at least two different measurement positions and basic assumptions of the displacement mechanics can be combined to infer a 3D displacement pattern (Severin et al 2011(Severin et al , 2014Salvoni et al 2015).…”

“…In conjunction with various forms of characterisation, analysis and monitoring (Kurucuk and Sweeney 2012; Sweeney and Abbott 2015; Salvoni et al 2015a; Salvoni et al 2015b), the modelling results presented herein assisted mine personnel implement a management plan that allowed successful recovery of the ore that was deemed at risk.…”
