PROBLEM This study assessed existing child-rearing attitudes in a sample population of licensed, full-time foster home mothers of Los Angeles County by comparing their attitudes with those of a comparable sample of biological mothers in a Well-Baby Clinic.METHOD Procedure. The instrument selected for assessing such attitudes was the Parent Attitude Research Instrument (PARI). The maternal form of the PARI wm selected for its value in assessing a wide variety of parental attitudes in a manner that allowed for straightforward statistical analysis and interpretation. Easily administered and consisting of 115 items that measure 23 different child-rearing attitudes, a tot,al raw score was calculated for every S on each of the 23 PARI attitude sub-scales. Means and standard deviations were calculated for each of the 23 scales and t-tests of difference between uncorrelated means for both the experimental group (foster mothers) and the control group ( Well-Baby Clinic mothers) were performed.
