Improvement of the Electrosynthesis and Physicochemical Properties of Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) Using a Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Micellar Aqueous Medium

Abstract: Electrosynthesis of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films was performed in a micellar aqueous solution containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and chronopotentiometry on a platinum electrode. The electrocatalytic effect of SDS was characterized by a significant decrease of the EDOT oxidation potential (E p) in the micellar medium relative to 0.1 M LiClO4 acetonitrile as well as aqueous solutions. Linear variation of E p with SDS concentration indicated the for… Show more

“…In step 3, protic solvents [ 1,[22][23][24][25] (mainly water) as well as acetonitrile [ 22 ] have been used as electrolytes for the electrosynthesis of PPy and PEDOT derivatives. For PPy, the use of an acetonitrile-based electrolyte was reported to yield more compact fi lms, with superior electron transfer characteristics and conductivities, presumably owing to the growing hydrophobicity of the chains during electropolymerization.…”

“…PEDOT can be doped with many anions, including macromolecular polyanions such as poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS). Previous studies have shown that PEDOT is highly insoluble in most solvents, it is electroactive in aqueous solutions [17][18][19], and exhibits a relatively high conductivity. On the basis of these results studies have been performed to investigate the electrochemistry of PEDOT in more detail by using voltammetric techniques (in most cases cyclic voltammetry).…”
