Improvement of the impact resistance of natural fiber–reinforced polypropylene composites through hybridization

Abstract: Polypropylene (PP) hybrid composites were prepared by the combination of natural reinforcements and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers. Wood, flax, and sugar palm fibers were used to increase stiffness and strength, while PET fibers served to improve impact resistance. Interfacial adhesion was increased by using a maleated PP (MAPP) coupling agent. The hybrid composites containing 20 wt% of the natural fibers were homogenized in a twin-screw compounder and then injection molded into standard tensile spe… Show more

“…have studied effect of PET fibre content on the impact resistance of hybrid PP composites with the coupling agent. They showed good adhesion with coupling agent MAPP increasing the impact resistance of the composites [20]. However, the chemical foaming agent increased the free volume in the structure, according to free volume increase, impact resistance decreased.…”

“…Moreover, the natural fibers with slightly different chemical compositions and irregularities in their shape when used in different combinations as reinforcement in polymer composites help to achieve desired functional properties in polymer composites. 8 The exceptional features of plant-based natural fibers over synthetic fibers such as abundant availability, enhanced acoustic insulation, good thermal stability, low cost and lightweight have been further influential for researchers to suggest natural fibers as an alternative for replacement over synthetic fibers in composite industries. 9,10 The literature already reports the use of natural fibers in domestic appliances and automobile interiors for non-structural applications.…”
