A new design of line start permanent magnet synchronous motor with consequent magnetic pole is proposed in this study. The number of the permanent magnets (PMs) in the proposed structure is 25% less than the PMs utilised in conventional motors, which could potentially decrease the manufacturing expenses, in particular, in larger size motors. The new design is characterised by simple structure, low cost and good synchronisation capability. The motor performance is simulated in a steady state and transient domain via a finite element (FE) software tool. For further verification, the FE analysis results are validated by experimental measurements on the prototype of the motor.
