Improvement of the properties of ground tire rubber (GTR)‐filled nitrile rubber vulcanizates through plasma surface modification of GTR powder

Abstract: The surface modification of ground tire rubber (GTR) powder to enhance its adhesion to nitrile rubber (NBR) vulcanizates was investigated. The hydrophobic surface of GTR powder has been transformed to a hydrophilic one through atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). The water contact angle dropped markedly from 116 to 0 after being treated for more than 10 s. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectral (ATR-FTIR) studies revealed the increase in peak intensity at 3298 and … Show more

“…are presented only in a few works, including investigation on waste rubber as potential filler for nitrile rubber [31] and compatibility improvement of obtained rubber compounds via surface modification of GTR with plasma [32]. In a research work [33], the variable content of ultrasonic devulcanized butyl rubber obtained from tire-curing bladder has been studied with respect to the mechanical properties of butyl rubber vulcanizes.…”

“…Zhang et al used atmospheric plasma to change the surface of GTR from hydrophobic (116°) to hydrophilic (0°) in order to enhance the compatibility of the particles with nitrile rubber vulcanizates. 6 Fuhrmann et al modified GTR particles with glycidyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid through photoinitiated grafting. 7 Bulk polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) on GTR particles without any initiator was performed by Kocevski et al 8 Fan and Lu investigated the graft copolymerization of poly(methyl methacrylate) onto waste tire rubber powder through ozonization.…”

“…the long and short run relationship between the variables. Estimating equation (5) tests for the presence of a cointegrated relationship, while equation (6) tests for presence of unit roots in the residual series : ( 6 ) where is the estimated residual from (1), n is the number of lags used to approximate a white noise process δ 0 =0 If we cannot reject the null hypothesis that =0 then there is no cointegration, and we can use OLS to estimate (5). The long run elasticities are given by:…”

“…Moreover, in the published papers the information about methods of waste rubber modification is presented, e.g. by controlled oxidation [35,36], ozonation [37], chlorination [38,39], using of supercritical gases and liquids [40,41], grafting monomers and acid anhydride using gamma and UV radiation [42,43], plasma [44,45], microwave [46,47] and ultrasound [48,49] treatment of waste rubber, etc. The modification of ground tire rubber improves the mechanical properties of polymer composition, which results from an increasing interfacial bonding between separate phases.…”
