Improving Bioinformatics Prediction of microRNA Targets by Ranks Aggregation

Abstract: microRNAs are noncoding RNAs which downregulate a large number of target mRNAs and modulate cell activity. Despite continued progress, bioinformatics prediction of microRNA targets remains a challenge since available software still suffer from a lack of accuracy and sensitivity. Moreover, these tools show fairly inconsistent results from one another. Thus, in an attempt to circumvent these difficulties, we aggregated all human results of four important prediction algorithms (miRanda, PITA, SVmicrO, and TargetS… Show more

“…The identification of chromosome translocations pointed to particular Musa subspecies as putative parents of cultivated clones and provided an independent support for hypotheses on their origin. While we have unambiguously identified a range of translocations, a precise determination of breakpoint positions will have to be done using a long-read DNA sequencing technology [ 71 , 72 , 73 ].…”

“…Meanwhile, a wide range of computational methods has been developed to recognize the targets of miRNAs [25]. While these methods are important as an initial step to study the miRNAs and target genes, their outcomes are variable [17]. Hence, there is a need for the credible approaches to identify the targets of miRNA with admissible accuracy and sensitivity.…”

“…Meanwhile, transcriptomic, proteomic, and computer-based approaches have provided valuable insights into the identification of miRNA targets [15,16]. Among these approaches, computer-based methods are not only very simple, time-saving, and cost-effective, but also are important as an initial step in studying the miRNAs and target genes [17].…”
